We hired a guide for a day as well and were really happy we did. The guides are usually extremely happy to be doing what they're doing.

Being a state authorized guide is a long arduous process, requiring hard work, study, language education and luck. But being selected usually means a sure ticket out of poverty for a lot of them, so they take the position very seriously. And their Cambodian spirit makes them so much fun to be around.

As usual, great post Nico! I agree with David - a guide to the temples of Angkor will change the experience by showing you places you would probably not find yourself. We always take a guide and then tell the guide we want some time to explore each site on our own, giving us the best of both worlds.

Please note: Our Bangkok source's comment about The Red Shirts having AK-47s and hand grenades turned out to be a rumor and could not be verified. It has since been removed from the post.

We apologize for any confusion this might have caused.

Great tip, Joe. A lot of people only think of the terracotta warriors when they think of Xian. Thanks for reminding us there's a culturally rich and interesting town to visit along with it.

Love this article - wish I'd been to half the places on the list!

Just to add my two pennies worth, for people seeking the 'terracotta warriors' in Xi'an, try Pingyao in Shanxi Province. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site and an amazing example of a Chinese Walled City. No cars are allowed inside the walls but there are guest houses where you can stay, some situated in buildings dating from the 1600 & 1700's

But hurry, more and more travellers are finding their way there.

ATM service charges can add up. If you're travelling over a long time consider First Republic Bank's personal checking account which gives you "FREE access to over 800,000 ATMs worldwide!" With no fees, you can withdraw smaller amounts more often, so you dont risk carrying large amounts of cash around. ($100 is more than a month's salary for much of the world.)The only drawback is you have to keep a $3,500 average monthly balance.

We recently got back from our vacation to Phuket and really wish that we didn't have to leave as we absolutely enjoyed it and will definitely visit again! We stayed at Bann Thai Resort and Spa which I would for sure recommend. We hired a car at $50 for 7 days, it was by far the most cost effective and a convienent way to go and it was alot of fun as well! The National Park is definitely worth while taking a tour. Also restaurants in Phuket City to visit are The Sweet n Spicy-romantic, delish and trendy. Book a table with your feet in the pool!
