Award-winning travel writer Pauline Frommer, daughter of guidebook pioneer and travel legend Arthur Frommer, does a weekly 2-hour radio show at WOR radio in New York City. We were delighted when on August 22nd she invited AirTreks VP Tom Michelson to chat with her over the phone about around-the-world travel.
Recently Pauline has been interested in how the movie Eat, Pray, Love has impacted long-term travel and around the-world trips in general. It has had an impact, no doubt about it, and with AirTreks leading the way selling these type of tickets, Pauline was especially interested in how we help travelers arrange trips like this.
The recording above is a short part of that day’s entire program. To hear the show in its entirety or to download podcasts of any of her other Frommer Travel radio shows you can find them all in her archives. Check out all Ms. Frommer’s conversations with travel personalities and experts around the world as well. Or else tune in online – the show airs on Sundays at 10am.

A quick note of public information: for the remainder of May until mid-June the AirTreks travel blog will be on a period of reduced activity in order to focus on the launch of our new website and me going to celebrate my marriage with a honeymoon in Croatia.
Until mid-June updates to the blog will be scant. But never fear, the AirTreks user experience will be back to form soon, and better than ever as soon as it does. We’re really liking our new look. We hope you do too.
Stay tuned for the new AirTreks.com. Looking forward to seeing you all back in June!
Sarah is one of AirTreks senior and longest standing travel consultants. And she’s done her fair share of international travel, having been to parts of the globe most of us only see in pictures. So I was super excited to hear what her dream trip would be. It appeared China, India and Northern Europe are the parts of the planet she still needs to fill in.
To Sarah I posed the requisite Your Agent’s Dream Trip question:
“Without having to state your reasons, and if cost was of no importance, what would be your dream around-the-world trip in 10 stops or less.”
Sarah lives in Portland with her husband Dan, also a talented AirTreks travel consultant, so her trip starts and ends there, in that lovely Pacific Northwest city.

As the Director of Technology at AirTreks, I personally wanted to address our outage yesterday. On March 24, our website and phone lines went down and were unavailable from approximately 10:56 am through 2:32 pm. AT&T reported the cause of the outage as a “failed network card in the routing equipment at the central office.”

“You kids don’t know how good you’ve got it,” says Grandpa from the backseat. He may be right — especially when it comes to travel. What Grandpa had to endure for our enhanced quality of leisure travel is astounding: fickle, unreliable airlines, volatile political situations, disease, poverty, the rampaging Godzillas – it almost makes your head spin around.
It’s hard to quantify just how much the traveling experience has improved from your grandpa’s, or even your dad’s era to ours, but there’s little doubt that as travelers we’ve got it pretty good. From the smooth transcontinental flights, that our bags typically arrive with us, our web check-ins, etickets, electronic itineraries, planning, booking and moving around the globe, there’s no doubt it’s better now than it ever has been. And it’s in no small part due to the pitfalls the previous generation was exposed to.
To demonstrate the point, here’s how modern traveling is better than it’s ever been:
An around the world trip is quite possibly one of the most important thing you will do in your life. This may seem like an exaggeration, but even the mot cynical Washington insider can bet on a life-altering experience. It’s a proven way to change your attitude, your worldview and your karma forever.
What’s also true is that a big trip costs money — sometimes lots of it. But it doesn’t have to break you. So how do you cut yourself a piece of pie in the sky without having to settle for a life without an around-the-world experience? Make it cost less, that’s how. Here are the 10 best ways to make your trip more affordable without having to let go of the dream.
So you’ve decided to travel around the world, and through some cursory research you’ve discovered that the airline alliances’ have special round-the-world fares. Which may be the reason why you ended up at AirTreks—because you knew there were alternatives to this market-rate published ticket. While there may be reasons for using the airline alliances to purchase your ticket, there are downsides that must be revealed.
