While not specifically related to travel, other than it’s French, this is a great way to move into your weekend.

A scene from François Truffaut’s 1960 movie “Tirez sur le Pianiste” or “Shoot the Piano Player”. Bobby Lapoint singing the very fun “Framboise”, with subtitles. See if you can follow along.

Have a Frenchtastic weekend!

Stories From Around the World is a CBS News item where journalist Steve Hartman randomly picks a person from the phone book in a randomly selected town around the world and does a story about them. Gleaned from the same idea he had several years ago when he tested the idea in towns around America, this time he ups the risk factor and sets out to meet people around the globe.

If you have some time this afternoon, 12 minutes, it’s absolutely worth the watch. These three wonderful vignettes, from India, Latvia, and Oman, are guaranteed to make your world a little smaller and your day a little brighter.

Video after the jump…

In case you haven’t seen this (it’s been out for awhile) well, it’s quite a stunner. A young man, Christoph Rehage, sets off on a year-long journey across northern China, on foot! One thing I can say about it, besides the amazing visual style, is it will likely make you rethink your opinion that your pile of dishes in the sink is a monumental task.

Matador Network has an enlightening interview with this Mr. Rehage for your reading pleasure. His best quote, when asked about the obstacles he had to overcome:

[The] foot-pains being the first one. Then there are all kinds of different pains to follow, hopelessness and self-doubt being the most difficult to overcome. It sounds a bit tacky, but the biggest obstacle is always within ourselves.

He of course made it, and traversed well over 4000 kilometers in the process.

Enjoy the vid, and have a great weekend!

New Zealand has been appearing in my consciousness a lot recently — a couple of my friends just returned from there and at least one fellow travel-blogger has written from there recently. Why? Call it synchronicity, or perhaps it’s the summer weather or the overall draw of this amazing nation.

There’s no denying the splendor, diversity and beauty of New Zealand. This Friday, take a trip through the scenery by way of the following adeptly put-together travel video by the NZ tourist bureau.

It’s always good to memorize a few words of a country’s language before setting off on your trip, if not only to appear polite when your visiting.http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/ZDyY8NzFcW4/2.jpg

Mandarin Chinese is arguably one of the world’s most difficult languages to learn as an English speaker. Fortunately The Travel Linguist has taken it upon themselves to help untangle your tongue just in time for your trip to China. Included are such time-honored classics as “hello”, “goodbye”, “thank you”, “do you speak English” and the always timeless, “where is the bathroom?”

To end 2009 with a festive heart, here’s a wonderful little video of what can happen in the most utilitarian of spaces if creative people want it bad enough.

Employees of Portugal’s national carrier, TAP Portugal and the Portuguese Airport Authority gave a little back to their customers this Christmas holiday in the way of irreverent and lighthearted entertainment.

To get your holiday weekend off to a great start, I’ve included a smash hit by pop heroes the Bouncing Souls. The song, Airport Security, will make you happy they ever invented the TSA. I guess there’s endless sources for song-writing inspiration these days.

Try to keep these happy riffs in mind as you’re herded through the rope maze on your way to visit Grandma.  (Who still loves you, by the way.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m sure by now everyone knows the dramatic story of US Airways flight 1549. But in case you’re seriously media challenged (or have just been really busy), on January 15th of this year Captain Chesley Sullenberger’s Airbus careened through a flock of Canadian Geese on it ascent out of La Guardia airport, losing power to both engines and wound up ditching into an icy Hudson River. Of course everyone lived. Hooray!

On June 9th the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) released their docket on the incident making public the information from the flight data recorders. A company called Exosphere 3D took that info and built up a true-to-life recreation allowing the casual viewer to relive the scenario using realistic points of view and real-time radio transmissions, all equally harrowing and thrilling to behold.

I recently came across this wonderful Tanzania tourism video and thought I’d give it back to my readers.

For those of you soon to be traveling to, or recently returning from Tanzania, or if you simply love wild animals, pretty beaches and/or anthropology, this will be a great 11 minutes spent.

Enjoy!
