On the Beaten Path or off it? Mostar, Bosnia. Credit: N Crisafulli

We were in Mostar, Bosnia, certainly not a town you’d say was overrun with tourists. My wife and I were walking toward a historically significant site near the center of town (Mostar was torn apart by the Bosnian War in the early 90s) and I of course was looking around for a photo opportunity, camera in hand. She was carrying a guidebook which was opened to the map page directing us to the site. At that moment a young American traveler walked by us, noticed our not-from-around-here aesthetic and muttered too loudly to his friend, “We gotta get off the beaten path, man.”

It was there, in that well-off-the-beaten-path town of Mostar in the middle of Bosnia, that I came to the conclusion that the whole idea of “the Beaten Path” is one of contention, a hypothetical notion that exists purely in the minds of those not satisfied where they are.

A huge percentage of people that do round the world trips spend at least part of their time in Southeast Asian countries. Based on what they take away, it’s not surprising why so many want to not only visit, but stay for long period s of time.

There’s something very touching about this video; great photography, music and a wonderful sense of pacing. Plus it gives you a sense of the simplicity of life in that area of the world. I love the second half, where all the faces come together to showcase the culture and the people.

Why do so many people travel in Southeast Asia? This typifies it, have a look.

Even though they jet across continents, rock stars were never supposed to be travel activists. Fortunately Mike Doughty is in the process of vindicating the addled indie rock community by filming the video for his latest release (You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified) amidst the beautiful settings of the Angkor Archeological Area and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Watch him as he sings his way around beautiful landmarks, tuk-tuk’ing and lounging next to the famous thousand-year-old smiles. Oh, it’s a great song too!

Have a great weekend!

Thanks to Mike at Vagabondish for the find.

I usually don’t start conversations telling people I’m “well-traveled”. Especially when I see websites like this around. I have however compiled a fairly good list of stamps in the passport, and because I interact with other world travelers both professionally and personally, I’ve got a pretty good idea of more amazing places I want to go.

This Friday, I thought I’d share a list of some of my favorite destinations in this wondrous world along with a few I still really want to get to. The list of course is abbreviated since I’d have to talk your ear off (perhaps over dinner?) to tell you all of them.
