Public Earth has dropped onto the scene recently, available to outside viewers (in beta) only less than a month ago. Though they’ve recently opened for visitors, they’ve been quietly assembling content so that they could have an extensive destination list ready for their unveiling.

Recently I came across the work of Jim Liu, a man currently nurturing a serious fascination: that of airline route maps. So deep does this run that he’s taken it upon himself to sketch out each one of them. And I mean each one. I contacted Mr. Liu who agreed to let me show the readers of the AirTreks blog his work.
His drawings cover nearly every airline out there: major, minor, commuter, cargo services, UFO, etc. And because Jim has been at this awhile you can see the progression, growth and solidification of various airlines. His Emirates set is especially interesting because it charts the growth of the airline before your very eyes. Liu has documented it back to 1990 when the airline was just a minor carrier connecting only 23 cities. Twenty-five maps and 19 years later, the airline connects twice that, and is twice as big.
