Photo Friday this week gives you an image taken in Cuzco (or Cusco), Peru. The photo was taken in an alley just off the Plaza des Armas in the city center. The walls you see here are original Inca construction dating back to the 14th century. So tightly do the wall’s stones fit together you couldn’t slip a piece paper between them if you tried. Not to mention the fact they’ve remained standing for 600 years with no mortar, a fair improbability if you think about it.

These type of walls, constructed with tightly fitted, sometimes multi-faceted stones, exist all over the city, throughout the region and across the ancient Inca empire. Industrious people, the Incas were. And they would’ve gotten away with it had it not been for those meddling Conquistadors. At least we still have the beautiful remnants of their work to admire.

Have a great weekend!

Photo taken in Dubai, UAE. The craft is an abra, the traditional mode of transportation to cross Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. Dubai Creek is less of a creek per se but a saltwater inlet that curves 9 miles inland, at the mouth of which the original city of Dubai was built.

The abra costs 1 dirham (about .25¢) and takes about 10 minutes to cross the creek. Anyone can ride the ferry.

Paris is an incredible city, one that absolutely lives up to its reputation, be it wonderful, dramatic or embittered.

Time lapse videos are all the rage these days. Time-defying sequences are as beautiful as they are mesmerizing and never fail to set the imagination running. Add an international setting to the mix and you have a perfect edition to the Friday Afternoon Palate Cleanser series.

Today’s video comes to you by way of Alex Silver and London, England. This heart-felt tribute uses 7,757 individual photos he took during the last of his days studying there and set it to the tune of “You’ve Got the Love” by Florence and the Machine.

Hope you enjoy it like we did: Jolly good!

The Photo Friday feature returns with some darling little photos taken in a corner of the Provence region of France. Provence in its entirety covers the very southeast point of the hexagon that is France, from the Côte d’Azur to the southern Alps to the Rhône River at its western edge. Some of the most beautiful countryside in France is located here, with stunning and rocky hill-towns, rolling fields and a landscape that many believe is the most beautiful you’ll see anywhere.

The following photos come from my recent trip to the southwest portion of the region, Aix-en-Provence, and a few of the towns surrounding it. It was a honeymoon yes, or else perhaps, the honeyest moon of all!

Hope you enjoy!

Shooting photographs will make you smarter. Just ask brainiac Ansel Adams, that guy was a genius. Still, people who take their camera on the road are usually on the hunt for that one “epic shot”, the amazing image that lingers in their consciousness and forever sums up their experience with just one look. Take a look at the rise of Flickr and you’ll see just how popular this perennial hobby has become.

I won’t be going into technique here what with the thousands of places online to learn how to take great pictures. But since all great pictures start with great equipment, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite cameras for you to become obsessed with on your own journey around the world. Without getting too technical (no one reads the specs anyway, do they?), here is my hugely opinionated short-list of great cameras for the traveling amateur.

If you’re not sure what style of camera to purchase, start by asking yourself how much you want to work at getting a great shot. Here are three different varieties of camera in ascending order of simplicity: the point and shoot, the mid-range all-around, and the D-SLR.
