One of our favorite events of the year, The Book Passage Travel & Food Writing and Photography Conference, happens soon (Aug 11 – 14) and is celebrating a major milestone. It’s turning 20! Almost but not quite of legal drinking age (like that’s ever stopped it) this year’s edition promises to be a terrific event. I hear there’s a special surprise waiting in the wings, because yes, 20 years is a long time.
Every August in Corte Madeira, CA, the esteemed Book Passage conference provides scholarship in the form of a mini educational institution, with a talented group of presenters acting as faculty and their audience being students, everyone mingling and mixing in a very intimate setting – lunches in the veranda, wine tastings and much daily camaraderie.
The faculty this year consists of such travel media luminaries as the always inspiring Don George, Outside magazine founding editor Tim Cahill, Hollywood celebrity turned travel scribe Andrew McCarthy, “An Irreverent Curiosity” author David Farley, San Francisco Chronicle Travel Editor Spud Hilton and many, many others.
Once again AirTreks is proud to be co-sponsoring the event, delivering the conference grand prize on Sunday for the best piece of travel writing submitted by students prior to the start of the conference.
It’s still possible to sign up, so if you’ve ever had even the slightest twinkle of a desire to be a travel writer (or published photographer), the 4-day event gets you closer to travel media editors and industry perennials than you thought possible. As Don George says, “It’s like summer camp for travel writers!” Come on down.
